Tech Ease for all your classroom technology needs. What are the main parts of the Picasa interface? Once you have launched Picasa and allowed it to scan your hard drive, you will see an interface that is divided into three areas: the Folder List on the left which lists the folders on your hard drive containing photos as well as any albums you create the Lightbox, which is the main area where images in your folders are displayed as thumbnails and the Photo Tray, where you can perform several actions on one or more images selected from the Lightbox.
The Lightbox The Lightbox displays your photos and movies as thumbnails. The Photo Tray The Photo Tray is used to collect photos and movies from one or more folders or albums so that you may work on them as a group. You can also assign a star rating to your photos using the button in the Photo Tray. To remove photos from the Photo Tray, click on the Clear button. Albums are the equivalent of keywords that can be used to organize your photos into categories. Instead of creating a folder and copying files from different directories and having to deal with duplicate files and other issues arising from this method of compilation, you would simply create an Album, name it Family Holiday Pictures and then you would drag pictures from the various Holiday folders located on your computer into the Family Holiday Pictures Album.
The Albums section will contain a listing of folders that have been uploaded to Picasa Web Albums more on this in future articles.

As an avid user of Picasa I find myself bombarded with questions from friends and family about how Picasa works and the tasks that can be performed. When you delete a photo from a folder in Picasa, you're really deleting the real photo from the real folder. The photo will also be deleted for all other applications including Windows File Explorer. When you move a photo from one folder to another in Picasa, you're really moving the real photo between real folders.
They will also be moved for all other applications, such as Windows File Explorer. Folders on your computer have "Manila Folder" icons. Albums have "blue book" icons. Albums do not actually contain photo files. Albums don't have their own copies of photos. Albums "reference photos" or "point to photos" or "present photos"; therefore, albums take negligible disk space.
You are never "moving" a photo from a folder to an album:. The Picasa application will continue to function, however, and can still be used by those who prefer it. We are maintaining the Picasa posts within TechEase because we find that many people are still using the application and come to the TechEase site looking for the specific help we offer. This collection allows you to group and organize your photos into categories. You can think of them as keywords that are used to tag your photos. Unlike the Folders collection, which matches exactly the folder locations on your computer, albums do not correspond to physical folders on your hard drive.
If you delete or move photos inside an album, the original files stay safe in their original locations on your hard drive. You can even add the same photo to multiple albums without creating multiple copies of the same photo on your hard drive. However, any edits you make to a photo in an album will also be applied to every instance of the photo, including the original.
