Parking revenue will help pay their bills while they are closed and help them to open their dinner and show as soon as COVID restrictions are lifted. Barr Camp is approximately 6. Many hikers will break the trek to the summit of Pikes Peak into two days by stopping to camp at Barr Camp, about halfway up the mountain.
Though anyone can stop to rest at the camp, staying overnight requires an advanced reservation. Reserve a bed in the main cabin, upper cabin, lean-to or space for your own tent.
All reservations include a homemade dinner and pancake breakfast the next morning. It's recommended you arrive to Barr Camp before pm. This will give you time to relax before eating, and allows a little extra time should you need it for the hike. The hike may take longer than you expect; they cannot hold dinner past pm.
Length: The Crags Trail is not as popular as the Barr Trail to summit the peak but since it's shorter and has less elevation gain, it is a much easier way to summit this famous mountain. It also offers better views with the Continental divide to the west and it is much less crowded. Shortly after you start from the trailhead you will reach the Fourmile creek - turn right and get on trail A crossing the bridge.
Continue through the forest, gradually gaining elevation and then hike through few switchbacks to get above the tree line. Great views open up to the west. Start of the Highway - Crystal Creek Reservoir There are no more buildings past the entrance, as the surroundings become forested and the road starts climbing, quite steeply at first, past two good viewpoints of the forested Fountain Creek canyon, with the city of Colorado Springs in the distance. The gradient lessens a little as the road approaches Crystal Creek Reservoir , a sizeable artificial lake formed by an earthen dam - a popular location for fishing, and the site of one of three cafes along the road, as well as providing the first good view of the mountain, which rises above the waters to the south.
Affiliate disclosure Middle of the Highway - Glen Cove From the reservoir, the main road climbs fairly gently through scrubby, mixed forest of pine, spruce, fir and aspen up to a second picnic area near mile 10 half way to the summit , where the surface changes to gravel and the highway begins a major ascent, gaining 1, feet over the next 3 miles via a number of tight switchbacks, where the speed limit is reduced to 10 mph.
Trees fade away and the land is now quite bare, covered only by short grass and the occasional bush part of the Alpine zone so the views are rather more impressive - much of the journey so far has been through thick woodland which obscures the wider landscape. The forest returns briefly as the road enters the small settlement of Glen Cove mile 13 , which has another cafe and a gift shop, and used to be the site of Pikes Peak Ski Center , until this was closed in owing to lack of consistent snow.

The Summit The next section is steep once more, though the climb is fairly short, as the road ascends high above the treeline into a landscape of barren reddish hills, pink granite outcrops, and very little vegetation. There are plenty of pull outs with good views, including at Bottomless Pit where the ground falls away 1, feet almost vertically down.
Patches of snow are likely to remain in sheltered places hereabouts even in late summer. A few other structures are built on the hilltop, including several transmitters and the terminus of the Manitou Springs cog railway. In most directions the land slopes quite steeply down so the views are generally of hazy, distant land far below rather than the nearby mountain sides.
It begins near the cog railway terminal in Manitou Springs. Just remember that most peak-bagging quests don't count an ascent unless you also climb down as well, leaving the railway off-limits as a downhill shortcut for the purist hikers who make their way up the Barr Trail.

The trail also serves as the starting point for the Devils Playground Trail, an alternate route to the summit of Pikes Peak. FS is a dirt road that can be a bit washboardy and bumpy at times, but except for after heavy rainfall or when snow covered, can be travelled by almost any vehicle. The trail starts across from a large parking lot just before the Crags Campground.
The first half-mile from the parking lot, and the last half-mile before ascending to the rocky prominence of the Crags, are most difficult parts of the trail, but in reality are not very difficult. The trail is easy to follow, and in the spring and summer offers lots of wildflower viewing and in the fall is a nice place to see fall foliage change colors.
To get there: From Colorado Springs, take U. In Divide, turn left south on Colorado Highway 67 and travel south for about 4 miles. Seasonal use pit toilets are available at the trailhead. Go you! This is going to be awesome. Weather: The weather on Pikes Peak can change drastically from hour to hour. Bring clothing to accommodate blistering heat at the trailhead and snow or thunderstorms at the summit. Rain gear is also recommended, as is sunscreen, sunglasses and a lightweight hat or hiking umbrella.
All of this will add weight to your body, so account for that in the intensity of your climb check your local mountain outfitter for lightweight versions of this gear. Check in at Barr Camp to verify favorable summit conditions. Water: There is no place to stop for potable water on Pikes Peak.
