The city is located in the agricultural region of central Zambia and is connected through train and road to all major parts of the country. The British government founded Lusaka in as a remote outpost for British administrators and farmers.
In Lusaka became the capital of what was now the Northern Rhodesia Colony. Capital-designation brought major development and infrastructure to the city.
The British colonial government commissioned John A. Trees were planted alongside the streets, and houses with lawns were constructed to accommodate new white settlers. Indigenous Africans who worked in the city were forced to live in compounds on the outskirts of town or immediately next to their place of employment. Their wives and children were not allowed to live with them or accompany them into the city. The racial hierarchy of Lusaka emphasized white authority and black inferiority in a colony where blacks outnumbered whites ten to one.
By the time Zambia gained independence in , indigenous Africans were allowed to live in the city but mostly in slums. Public utilities were installed and these houses represented a vast improvement compared to homes built for blacks during the colonial era. In , the University of Zambia opened in the city to educate all residents of Zambia. A new, smarter, roofed market has just been built along Freedom Way.
Moore Pottery on Kabalenga Road has an excellent range of ceramics, and every last Saturday of the month there is an excellent craft market in Kabulonga suburb at the Dutch Reform Church grounds. A word of warning — Lusaka is famous for car thieves, pick-pockets and bag snatchers, but if you have someone who can mind your vehicle and keep a good grip on your bags, it is quite safe.
There are several sports clubs in Lusaka which offer facilities for golf, tennis, swimming and squash. The Lusaka Club offers bowls, tennis and squash. Polo is a popular sport, especially among expatriates, and the polo field at the showgrounds usually has matches on the weekends. Hash House Harriers organise walks and runs on Saturdays at 15h Several swimming pools are available.
One can also use the pools at the Intercontinental and Pamodzi hotels at modest prices. The Mulungushi Hall is the main hall in town and can accommodate up to Four other committee rooms can take from 40 to people. For the best local wares and wonders, the Sunday Market at the Arcades Shopping Centre on Great East Road is a good place to fill your suitcase with souvenirs before flying home.
For a spot of suburban safari , Lusaka now has a National Park on the outskirts of the city. Further along is the Munda Wanga Environmental Park with stunning botanical gardens and a small zoo. Here rescued wild animals are rehabilitated for reintroduction into the wild, including lions and cheetahs. It also has a relaxing pool and braai area. The Mongu road coming in from the west via the Kafue National Park is km long.
